COMPETITION:

Competed extensively l970 - 1972 and 1983 - 1986. Received numerous National Championship Certificates during her competition period from the USKA. Also rated Nationally and Regionally by Star ratings during the early- mid 80's. Also Awarded "OKKKF Competitor of The Year " Award in 1986 by the Okinawa Kenpo Karate-Kobudo Federation.

AWARDS:

1996 Inducted into the UNITED STATES KARATE ALLIANCE HALL OF FAME, at USKA World Championships in New Orleans, La.

SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENTS:

1983 Established "Safety Kids Program", a nationally acclaimed developmentally structured preschool karate class. Designed to teach stranger awareness skills it includes gross-motor and fine motor coordination games with a sensory-integration format. Children learn what to say and do when confronted with a stranger, basic self-defense skills including releases from chokes and grabs and specific hand and leg techniques (punches, kicks, C-stepping, etc.). Role playing is an integral part of this program.

l991 Established Exceptional People program for individuals with physical and/or mental differences. Retardation, cerebral palsy, spinal bifida, vision or hearing impaired, etc. Children with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorder, conduct disorders are included in regular classes or trained privately.

l995 Established "Mary Louise Kuntz Memorial Award", "From Survivor to Thriver", to be given to a woman survivor of violent crime. Includes free tuition program to Heilman Karate Academy, Inc. Selection of winner determined by Board of Directors of "Kuntz-Heilman Fund" based on referrals from area agencies.

l995 Established "Kuntz-Heilman Fund", a non-profit organization whose purpose it is to provide self-defense training to women survivors of violent crime and/or abusive relationships at no cost to the participants. The organization is funded via grants and donations, private as well as public, so that "no woman need walk alone, in fear, again".

SEMINAR INSTRUCTION:

Hanshi Heilman has for the last decade taught numerous Seminars both Nationally and Internationally along with her husband, covering such topics as Okinawan Karate and Kobudo, Womens Self-Defense, Martial Arts History and Philosophy.

T.V. and VIDEO PRESENTATIONS:

Co-produced the "Okinawa Kenpo-Kobudo System" with husband, C. Bruce Heilman in a series of 23 tapes, distributed world wide.

Presented a series of TV. programs including self-defense, "Living as a Survivor", and "From Survivor to Thriver", a series of interviews conducted by the Berks Cable Co. and Berks Women's Network. The subject matter includes the psychological aspects of life after violence and traumatizing factors. Available on video.
